November 12, 1922 is a significant date in the history of the Black Greek system. This date marks the establishment of the FIRST African American sorority to be founded on a predominantly white campus- Butler Universiy in Indianapolis, Indiana. Our seven founders felt a strong need to pull African American women together through sisterhood, scholarship, and service to all mankind. This historic sorority has set the tone for women of color. Our astonishing founders believed that the self-respect, knowledge and discipline gained through study would help individuals recognize their duty and responsibility for their society. From that day on, Sigma Gamma Rho has progressively evolved into a thriving sisterhood that comprises of more than 75,000 women in the USA, Bermuda, Africa, Virgin Islands, and Germany. Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. is a leading national service organization which has met the challenges of the day!
