The History of Pi Mu
Soror Tannia Jacobs started her college career at Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville in the fall of 1999. Soror Jacobs was inducted into Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Incorporated in the spring of 2001. She later transferred to the University of Missouri-St. Louis in the fall of 2001. Early in the spring of 2004, a little yellow flyer caught the attention of several women on the campus. On a campus where the history of Black Greek Lettered organizations were already established, through St. Louis city wide chapters, five women felt that a greater option was needed for women of color and began their quest to bring Sigma to UMSL. With the help of the Eta Mu Sigma Chapter and Soror Jacobs, blue and gold was brought to UMSL’s campus on Saturday, March 20, 2004. On that same day, the Pi Mu chapter was chartered on the campus. The charter members are Soror Tannia Jacobs, Soror Lucretia Christian, Soror Iris Hamlin, Soror Brianne Overton, and Soror Tanika Prowell. Due to a family emergency, one of the five young ladies was not able to participate in the March 20th induction. Soror Panya Weathersby was later inducted into the Pi Mu chapter April 28, 2004. As of April 28, 2004 the chapter currently has six active members. The Pi Mu chapter is the first Historically Black Greek Lettered Organization in the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) to be chartered on the campus of the University of Missouri-St. Louis. Since the chartering of the chapter, these astonishing young women have supported other Black Greek Lettered Organization’s events and have also completed several community service projects and several other events.
